Understanding Team Building Exercises

Whether you are a small business entrepreneur or the CEO of an MNC, team building exercises must feature at the top of your list when it comes to organizational development.

Having a dedicated, ambitious and committed team is the key principle to Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI), whether at the workplace, in the community or even at home. When people in a group are imbued with true team spirit, every individual contributes to the growth of the team and achievements of the team become the source of individual pride and satisfaction. Effective teamwork is undoubtedly at the bottom of all successful achievements.

However, highly motivated teams don’t just happen by accident – they have to be built. Team building exercises help CEOs and Managers build dream teams that lay the foundation of success for the company.

What are team building exercises?

To put it simply, team building exercises are a set of tasks that are innovatively designed and structured to develop the ability of team members to work together. These tasks help team members shed their inhibitions and work towards a common goal.

Team building exercises can be simple or complex in nature. From kids' games to cooking activities and corporate drumming, any activity that requires teamwork is allowed. There are literally hundreds of team building exercises that target a wide range of issues, ranging from communication exercises and decision making exercises to adaptability exercises and trust exercises. Anything is allowed. The end objective is all that matters – that team members come out of the experience feeling a high degree of bonding and motivation.

In spite of the wide variety of choices, choosing the best team building exercise is not an easy task. Add to this the fact that management expects employees to come out of the experience feeling motivated and united, and it is plain to see that the company has a lot riding on these programs.

What are the best team building exercises?

Almost everyone who has worked in the corporate environment has undergone at least one team building exercise that has left them feeling embarrassed or maybe even plain bored. But team building exercises, if selected carefully, can be lots of fun. More importantly, they can be a learning experience for individual members and for the team as a whole. These activities can help team members make the transition from individuals to a ‘team’.

Our team building exercises utilize concepts many of your staff will already be familiar with such as The Apprentice, Iron Chef, CI: The Crime Investigators, Secret Agent 007, The Amazing Chase, and more. The result is better "buy-in" from your employees (who have no doubt "seen it all" when it comes to morale events), a more valuable experience, and best of all, improved morale, increased camaraderie and enhanced productivity.

It is hard to point out activities that are best for teams everywhere. It is far easier for managers to identify the best team building activities keeping specific goals of a specific team in mind. It is equally important to consider the needs of individual team members also. Some of the important questions that can help managers make the right choice are:

  • Should the activity help thaw the ice between members?
  • Should members learn to sacrifice individual interests for those of the team?
  • Is communication a problem?
  • Do the team members share common interests?
  • Does the team need a morale booster?

Team building exercises for long term results:

Although businesses agree that human resource is their most valuable asset, they are often guilty of paying too little attention to their most valuable assets. For team building exercises to provide all the benefits that they are supposed to, regular training and follow up is necessary. Otherwise, teams cannot really achieve long terms success and team building activities lose their meaning.

For maximum effectiveness, team building exercises must take place regularly and continuously. Only then do employees get a chance to reconnect with each other and present a united face.
